Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Relief of sneezing, nasal discharge & itching, congestion or stuffiness
- Relief of ocular itching, tearing and redness
- Relief of itching of palate and coughing
- Relief of itching and the size & number of hives
Pharmacology
- Desloratadine is the major active metabolite of Loratadine
- Non-sedating; long acting tricyclic histamine antagonist
- Selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity
- Inhibition of histamine release from human mast cell
Dosage & Administration
- 2 ml drops once daily for child 6-11 months of age
- 2.5 ml drops once daily for child 1-2 years of age
- 2 ml syrup once daily for child 6-11 months of age
- 2.5 ml syrup once daily for child 1-5 years of age
- 5 ml syrup once daily for child 6-11 years of age
- 10 ml syrup once daily for adults & >12 years of age
- 1 tablet daily for adults and children 12 years of age and over

- No clinically relevant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the medication or its ingredients or Loratadine
Side Effects
- Less common side effects may include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, myalgia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Safe use during pregnancy not established
- Not to be used during pregnancy unless clearly indicated
- Passes into breast milk
- Decision should be made regarding nursing or discontinuation of the drug
Precautions & Warnings
- Recommended starting dose of one 5 mg tablet every other day in adult patients with liver or renal impairment
- Starting dose recommendation based on pharmacokinetic data
- Consideration required for patients with medical or familial history of seizures
