Description
- Capotril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat mild-to-moderate hypertension and congestive heart failure. It competitively inhibits ACE, thereby decreasing levels of angiotensin II and increasing plasma renin activity.
Dosage and Administration
- Initial dose for mild-to-moderate hypertension is 12.5 mg twice daily
- Usual maintenance dose for hypertension is 25mg twice daily
- Maximum dosage for severe hypertension is 50 mg three times a day
- Starting dose for heart failure is 6.25mg or 12.5mg
Indications
- Adjunct to thiazide therapy for mild-to-moderate hypertension
- Treatment of severe hypertension
- Treatment of congestive heart failure
Interaction
- Do not coadminister aliskiren with Capotril in patients with diabetes
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to captopril
- Contra-indicated in pregnancy
- Not recommended for women of child-bearing potential
