Description
- Orally dissolving film designed to be applied on top of the tongue
- Dissolves within 20 seconds and swallowed with saliva
- Does not require water for dissolution
- Contains Emiset base - a racemic form of Emiset
- Selective blocking agent of the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor type
- Empirical formula: C18H19N3O
- Molecular weight: 293.3
Pharmacology
- Potent, highly selective 5HT3 receptor-antagonist
- Exact mode of action in control of nausea and vomiting not fully known
- Blocks initiation of vomiting reflex through 5HT3 receptors
- May also act through central nervous system pathways
Dosage
- Variety of dosages for different patient populations and types of nausea/vomiting
- Ranges from 4 mg to 24 mg in different formulations

Interaction

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the drug or its components
- Contraindicated for concomitant use of apomorphine
Side Effects
- Common side effects include headache, constipation, and diarrhea
- Rare occurrences of rash, sensation of flushing or warmth, hiccups, and liver enzyme abnormalities
- Rare cases of anaphylaxis, brochospasm, tachycardia, and chest pain reported
- No evidence of extrapyramidal reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of carcinogenic effects in animal studies
- Not mutagenic in standard tests
- No well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in breast milk of rats
Precautions & Warnings
- Hypersensitivity reactions reported in patients with hypersensitivity to similar drugs
- Not a drug that stimulates gastric or intestinal peristalsis
- Should not be used instead of nasogastric suction
- May mask progressive ileus and/or gastric distension
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage recommendation same for patients with impaired renal function
- In severe hepatic impairment, single maximal daily dose of 8 mg recommended
- Limited information available for pediatric patients 4 years of age or younger
- No dosage adjustment needed for patients over the age of 65
