Indications
- Treats hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Blocks vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II
- Selective binding to AT 1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle
- Does not inhibit ACE (kininase II)
Dosage & Administration
- Usual recommended starting dose is 20 mg once daily
- May be increased to 40 mg for further reduction in blood pressure
- No initial dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported with digoxin or warfarin
- Bioavailability not altered by antacids
- Not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with adverse reaction incidence similar to placebo
- Most common adverse reaction is dizziness
