Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Risk reduction of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Pharmacology
- Angiotensin II blocking
- Aldosterone secretion reduction
- Vasoconstrictor inhibition
- Renin-angiotensin system effect
- Thiazide diuretic action
Dosage
- Starting dose of 50/12.5 once daily
- Maximum dose of 100/25 once daily
- Antihypertensive effect attained within three weeks
Administration
- May be administered with other antihypertensive agents
- May be taken with or without food
Interaction
- No significant drug-drug interactions with specific drugs
- Concomitant use with potassium-sparing diuretics may cause increase in serum potassium
- Thiazide diuretics interaction with alcohol, barbiturates, and narcotics
- Dosage adjustment of antidiabetic drugs may be required
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Contraindicated in patients with anuria or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs
Side Effects
- Symptomatic hypotension including dizziness
- Occasional hyperkalaemia
- Angioedema
- Vertigo, gastrointestinal disturbances, angina, palpitation
- Headache, sleep disorders, malaise
- Urticaria, pruritus, rash; rarely hepatitis
- Atrial fibrillation, syncope, paraesthesia; also reported pancreatitis
- Anaphylaxis, cough, depression, erectile dysfunction
- Anemia, thrombocytopenia, hyponatremia, arthralgia
- Myalgia, renal impairment, rhabdomyolysis, tinnitus
- Photosensitivity, vasculitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoided in pregnancy unless essential
- Adverse effects on fetal and neonatal blood pressure control and renal function
- Not recommended in breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Periodic determination of serum electrolytes
- Rare hypokalemia development
- Impaired renal function
- Use cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
Use in Special Populations
- Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment
- Not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment

Overdose Effects
- Manifestations include hypotension and tachycardia
- Supportive treatment for symptomatic hypotension
- Neither losartan nor its metabolite can be removed by hemodialysis
