Description
- Lincosamide antibiotic
- Derived from lincomycin
- Effective against aerobic gram-positive cocci such as Staphylococcus aureus
- Effective against anaerobic gram-negative bacilli like Bacteroides species
- Effective against anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli like Propionibacterium species
- Effective against anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci like Peptococcus species
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for serious infections: 150 mg-300 mg every six hours
- Dosage for more severe infections: 300 mg-450 mg every six hours
- Dosage for pediatric patients weighing 10 kg or less: 1/2 teaspoon (37.5 mg) three times a day
- Dosage for adults with serious infections due to aerobic gram-positive cocci: 600-1200 mg/day in 2-4 equal doses
Interaction
- Enhances the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents
- Antagonism with erythromycin in vitro
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients previously found to be sensitive to clindamycin
Side Effects
- Adverse effects: abdominal pain, oesophagitis, nausea, skin rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Crosses the placenta in humans
- Reported to appear in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Monitoring of organ system functions desirable for newborns and infants
- No dose adjustment necessary for geriatric use
Overdose Effects
- Rarity of overdosage with orally administered Maxclin
- Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis not effective in removing Maxclin from serum
