Description
- An orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Dosage
- The usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required.
Mode of Action
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall.
Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Storage Conditions
- Keep below 30°C temperature, protected from light & moisture, out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution when administered to a nursing woman.
Precautions & Warnings

- Increases in prothrombin times noted, care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.

Hypersensitivity Reactions

Usual Adult Dosage
- 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses.
Elderly Dosage

Absorption

Cefixime Characteristics
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme, may be susceptible to organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases.
