Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Blocks vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II
- Selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT 1 receptor
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of 20 mg once daily
- May be increased to 40 mg for further blood pressure reduction
- No dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients or those with moderate to marked renal/hepatic impairment
- May be administered with or without food
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported with digoxin or warfarin
- Bioavailability not significantly altered by co-administration of antacids
- Not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
- Use caution with NSAIDs and NSAID therapy
- Monitor renal function periodically in patients receiving Olsart and NSAID therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with incidence of adverse reactions similar to placebo
- Most common adverse reaction: dizziness
- Other adverse reactions include back pain, diarrhea, headache, hyperglycemia, etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Discontinue when pregnancy is detected
- May cause injury or death to the developing fetus when used in second and third trimesters
- Potential excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system may lead to changes in renal function
- Associated with oliguria, progressive azotemia, acute renal failure, and death in susceptible individuals
Overdose Effects
- No experience of overdose reported
- Likely effects include hypotension, tachycardia, and potential bradycardia
- Supportive cardiovascular system care is necessary for clinically significant hypotension
