Composition
- Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Mode of Action
- Adequate Calcium in the blood is vital for a wide variety of bodily functions
- Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract
- Vitamin D stimulates bone formation and has synergistic effects on bone growth
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water
- One effervescent tablet dissolved in a glass of water to drink orally
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins or laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the components of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth and drowsiness
- Occasional skin rash reported following administration of Vitamin D Supplements
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake during pregnancy should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided during pregnancy
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Serum calcium levels should be followed during long-term treatment
- Renal function should be monitored through measurement of serum creatinine
- Vitamin D should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Patients with severe renal insufficiency may require other forms of vitamin D
- Patients with immobilization may be at increased risk of hypercalcemia
- Dose of vitamin D should be considered when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
- Additional doses of calcium or vitamin D should be taken under close medical supervision
Overdose Effects
- Hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain
- Persistently high calcium levels may lead to irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification
