Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Can be used as monotherapy or in dual combination with other antidiabetic agents
Dosage
- Recommended daily doses of 50mg or 100mg for monotherapy
- 50mg twice daily when in dual combination with Metformin or a Thiazolidinedione
- Pediatric use not recommended
Mode of Action
- Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor
- Slows the inactivation of incretin hormones
- Increases insulin release and decreases glucagon levels in glucose-dependent manner
Interaction
- No interactions observed with pioglitazone, metformin, glibenclamide, etc.
- Glucose-lowering effect may be reduced by certain active substances
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Moderate to severe renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment with specific enzyme levels
- Type 1 diabetes
Side Effects
- Majority of adverse reactions are mild and transient
- Rare case of hepatic dysfunction observed
- No additional safety signals observed in long-term trials
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be used during pregnancy
- Not to be used during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients aged 75 years and older
- Liver function tests (LFTs) to be monitored at specified intervals
- Discontinue treatment if specific liver enzyme levels persist
- Use with caution in congestive heart failure patients
