Medicine Details

Indications

  • Reduces blood sugar levels
  • Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
  • Used when diet, exercise, and weight loss do not sufficiently control blood sugar levels

Pharmacology

  • Belongs to the sulphonylurea group
  • Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
  • Facilitates Ca+2 transport
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
  • Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
  • Can be increased in divided doses when needed
  • Dose determined by doctor based on blood sugar levels
  • Recommended daily dose for modified release preparation: one to four tablets in a single intake at breakfast time

Interaction

  • May interact with other oral antidiabetic medicines
  • May interact with antibiotics, medicines for high blood pressure, fungal infections, depression, painkillers, and others
  • May increase effects of medicines that reduce blood clotting
  • May be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
  • May impair ability to concentrate or react

Contraindications

  • Allergic to gliclazide or related medicines
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
  • Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
  • Severe kidney or liver disease
  • Breastfeeding
  • Taking medicines to treat fungal infections

Side Effects

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • Liver disorders
  • Skin reactions such as rash, itching, hives, and angioedema
  • Decrease in blood cells count
  • Digestive disorders
  • Temporary vision impairment
  • Other adverse events

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy
  • Not recommended while breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Observe treatment plan prescribed by the doctor
  • Regular monitoring of blood and urine sugar levels necessary
  • Increased risk of hypoglycaemia in initial weeks of treatment
  • Symptoms and management of low blood sugar
  • Monitoring blood glucose when prescribed with fluoroquinolone antibiotics
  • Not recommended for use in children
  • Not recommended for individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
