Mitosan 80 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of essential hypertension in adults
• Reduction of cardiovascular morbidity in adults with atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes mellitus with documented target organ damage

Pharmacology

• Telmisartan is a non-peptide angiotensin-ll receptor antagonist
• Blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone secreting effects of angiotensin-ll
• Does not inhibit ACE (kininase-ll)
• Does not affect the response to bradykinin
• Has much greater affinity for the AT1 receptor than for the AT2 receptor

Dosage & Administration

• Usual starting dose of Telmisartan tablets is 40 mg once a day
• Blood pressure response is dose-related over the range of 20 to 80 mg
• Initial therapy with Telmisartan is not recommended in patients ≥75 years old or with hepatic impairment

Interaction

• Increased risk of renal impairment and loss of antihypertensive effect when co-administered with NSAIDS
• Co-administration with aliskiren in patients with diabetes should be avoided

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to this product or any of its components

Side Effects

• Common side effects for hypertensive patients include sinus pain, congestion, back pain, and diarrhea
• Common side effects for patients of cardiovascular risk reduction include intermittent claudication and skin ulcer

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C (first trimester) and D (second and third trimester)
• Should be used in lactating mothers only if benefit outweighs risk

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid fetal or neonatal exposure
• Monitor carefully in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function
• Avoid concomitant use of an ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker

Overdose Effects

• Most likely manifestations include hypotension, dizziness, tachycardia, and increase in serum creatinine
