Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage may vary based on severity of infection and age
  • Usual dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times observed in some patients
  • Caution needed for patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mostly mild and self limiting in nature
  • Frequent side-effects include diarrhea and stool changes
  • Other possible reactions include headache, dizziness, allergies, and mild transient changes in liver and renal function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution for penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
