Indications

  • Control of acute asthma
  • Management of chronic asthma (For both Symptomatic and prophylactic treatment)
  • For controlling nocturnal asthma and early morning wheezing
  • Management of chronic obstructive lung disease (Chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease
  • Control of apnea of pre-maturity

  • Suppression of airway response to stimuli
  • Increased force of contraction of diaphragmatic muscles
  • Influence of half-life by various variables

Dosage & Administration

  • Individualized dose based on peak serum theophylline concentration measurements
  • Sustained release preparations for adults and children
  • Recommended maintenance doses for different age groups

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with xanthine derivatives
  • Increased clearance by barbiturates, carbamazepine, lithium, phenytoin, rifampicin, sulphinpyrazone
  • Reduced clearance by allopurinol, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, corticosteroids, erythromycin, frusemide, isoprenaline, oral contraceptive, thiabendazole
  • Potentiation of hypokalemia resulting from beta-2-agonist therapy, steroids, diuretics and hypoxia

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Theophylline or any other component of the product

Side Effects

  • Rare at normal dosage
  • May include gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, insomnia, hypotension, CNS stimulation, diuresis
  • More common in children

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Uncertain impact on foetal harm
  • Excretion into breast milk
  • Possible irritability or signs of mild toxicity in nursing infants

  • Careful consideration for drug interactions and physiologic conditions altering Asmaloc SR clearance
  • Dosage adjustment prior to initiation and during follow up
