Indications
- Treats acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Marked activity in Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Clinical efficacy demonstrated in infections caused by specific pathogens
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption, irrespective of food intake
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended up to 14 days if required
- Adult dosage ranges from 200-400 mg daily based on infection severity
- Dosage adjustments for children based on age and weight
- Special dosage instructions for typhoid treatment and renal impairment
Interaction
- Potential for increases in prothrombin times when used with anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
