Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Bronchodilator
- Inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Selective smooth muscle relaxation
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Decreased affinity towards adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children (>12 years of age): 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children (6-12 years of age): 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
- Doxophylline SR tablet for 400 mg daily dose
Interaction
- Avoid administration with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Exercise caution with sympathomimetic drugs
- Monitor hepatic clearance with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine and propanolol
- Consider increased dosage with phenytoin, other anticonvulsants and cigarette smoking

- Hypersensitivity to the drug or xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- Lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution in pregnancy and lactation
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Insufficient clinical evidence for use during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Factors affecting hepatic clearance
- Caution in cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment
- No risk of addiction or dependence
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- No specific antidote
