Indications
- Relief of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms
- Relief of chronic idiopathic urticaria symptoms
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg/180 mg once daily
- Pediatric dosage: varies based on age and condition
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may increase fexofenadine level in plasma
- No interaction with omeprazole, but interaction with antacids containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, fatigue
- Uncommon: insomnia, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
- Rare: hypersensitivity reactions with manifestations such as angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnoea, flushing and systemic anaphylaxis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use in pregnant women
- Not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned
- Unlikely to produce significant effects on driving or use of machines
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in patients with renal impairment
- No substantial effect on pharmacokinetics in moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Adverse events similar in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
