Indications
- Hypertension
- Hospitalizations in congestive heart failure patients
- Reducing death in congestive heart failure patients after myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Belongs to angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Blocks AT1 subtype
- Dilates blood vessels
- Reduces blood pressure
Dosage
- 80 to 160 mg once daily for hypertension
- 40 mg twice daily for heart failure
- 20 mg twice daily for post-myocardial infarction
Administration
- Should be taken on an empty stomach
- No initial dosage adjustment for elderly patients with mild to moderate renal and hepatic insufficiency
Interaction
- No drug interactions of clinical significance found
- Not metabolized extensively
- Highly bound to plasma proteins
- Concomitant use of potassium sparing diuretics may lead to increase in serum potassium
