Indications
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C)
- Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults
- Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adult patients with chronic, non-cancer pain
Pharmacology
Locally-acting chloride-channel activator, increases intestinal secretion, increases intestinal motility, activates ClC-2 chloride channels, efflux of chloride ions, efflux of sodium ions, water follows sodium into the lumen, stimulates recovery of muscosal barrier function
Dosage & Administration
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation: 8 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
- Dosage in patients with hepatic impairment: Dose adjustment not required for moderately impaired hepatic function, recommended starting dose is 8 mcg once daily for severely impaired hepatic function
- Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and Opioid-induced Constipation: 24 mcg twice daily orally with food and water
- Dosage in patients with hepatic impairment for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and Opioid-induced Constipation: 16 mcg twice daily for moderately impaired hepatic function, 8 mcg twice daily for severely impaired hepatic function
Interaction
Possibility of a dose-dependent decrease in efficacy in patients using diphenylheptane opioids
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category: C
- Excretion in milk: Not known
- Caution for nursing woman: Caution should be exercised when Lubiprostone is administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Nausea: Patients taking Lubicon may experience nausea. Concomitant administration of food with Lubicon may reduce symptoms of nausea
- Diarrhea: Lubistone should not be prescribed to patients that have severe diarrhea
- Bowel Obstruction: In patients with symptoms suggestive of mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction, perform a thorough evaluation to confirm the absence of an obstruction prior to initiating therapy with Lubicon
