Description

  • Lubicon is a medication indicated for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C), Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults, and Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adult patients with chronic, non-cancer pain. It works by increasing intestinal secretion and motility to aid the passage of stool.

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation is 8 mcg twice daily orally with food and water. For Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and Opioid-induced Constipation, the recommended dose is 24 mcg twice daily orally with food and water.

Dosage in Patients with Hepatic Impairment

  • No dosage adjustment required for patients with moderately impaired hepatic function. For patients with severely impaired hepatic function, the recommended starting dose is 8 mcg once daily for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and 16 mcg twice daily for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and Opioid-induced Constipation.

Interaction

  • Possible decrease in efficacy when used with diphenylheptane opioids.

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy category C
  • Caution advised for nursing women due to increased fluid secretion in the intestine and intestinal motility.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Patients may experience nausea, can be reduced by taking with food
  • Not recommended for patients with severe diarrhea
  • Thorough evaluation for mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction is recommended before initiating therapy.

Overdose Effects

  • Adverse reactions may include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, flushing/hot flash, retching, dyspnea, pallor, stomach discomfort, anorexia, asthenia, chest discomfort, dry mouth, hyperhidrosis, syncope.
