Description
- Selective inhibition of RNA polymerase
- Effective against human influenza A, B, and C viruses
Indications
- Treatment of novel or re-emerging pandemic influenza virus infections
Pharmacology
- Metabolized into favipiravir ribosyl triphosphate
- Prevents replication of the influenza virus
- Effective against all types and sub-types of human influenza viruses
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dosage of 1600 mg orally twice daily on Day 1
- 600 mg orally twice daily from Day 2 to Day 5
- Total treatment duration of 5 days
Interaction
- Decreased RBC production in animal studies
- Increases in liver function parameters in animal studies
Contraindications
- Contraindicated for pregnant women and women who may possibly be pregnant
Side Effects
- Diarrhea
- Increase of blood uric acid levels
Pregnancy & Lactation
- May cause delayed development or death of embryos during early stage of pregnancy
- Should not be given during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Should not be given in pregnant women
- Confirmation of non-pregnancy required in women of childbearing potential before use
- Thorough contraception measures required during treatment and 7 days after treatment
- Caution for hepatic and renal impaired patients
