Indications
- Hypertension
- Reducing hospitalizations in patients with congestive heart failure
- Reducing death in patients who developed congestive heart failure after myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Oral medication
- Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Vasoconstriction reduction
- Dilation of blood vessels
Dosage
- Usual dose of Valsartan: 80 to 160 mg once daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
- Maximum blood pressure reduction occurs within 4 weeks
Administration
- Should be taken on an empty stomach
- No initial dosage adjustment required for elderly patients with mild to moderate renal and hepatic insufficiency
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions found
- No expected metabolic induction or inhibition of the cytochrome P450 system
- Concomitant use of potassium sparing diuretics may lead to an increase in serum potassium
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of this product

Precautions & Warnings
- Care should be exercised in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment
- Dosage reduction or discontinuation may be required with patients having pre-existing renal impairment
- Caution should be exercised when initiating therapy in patients with heart failure and post-myocardial infarction patients
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
- Greater sensitivity of some elderly persons cannot be ruled out
Overdose Effects
- Manifestations: hypotension and tachycardia
- Supine position and intravenous infusion of normal saline may be necessary
