Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
- Increased adult dosage for severe infections: 500 mg three times daily
- Children's dosage: 125 mg three times daily
- Increased children's dosage for severe infections: 250 mg three times daily
- Specific recommended doses for different infections and age groups
- Special dosage for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, and renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, or water, and should be taken immediately
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
- May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects including diarrhoea, indigestion, rash, and rarely pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Limited data in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Appropriate therapy should be instituted if superinfections occur
