Indications

• Treatment of calcium deficiency
• Useful for glowing children, lactating and pregnant mothers
• Removes symptoms associated with hypocalcemia
• Relieves paresthesia, carpopedal spasm, muscle cramps
• Helps with increased muscle excitability leading to tetany
• Aids in relieving convulsions, mental changes, and dermatitis
• Affects ECG changes

Pharmacology

• Supplements dietary calcium
• Neutralizes gastric acid in peptic ulcer disease
• Sequesters phosphorus in the intestine
• Reduces total body phosphate accumulation in chronic renal failure
• Reduces serum phosphate concentration
• Ensures deposition of calcium phosphate in bone and soft tissue

Dosage & Administration

• For adults, including elderly: 1-2 tablets (300 mg-600 mg) daily
• For children over 3 years: 1 tablet (300 mg) daily
• For pregnant women: 3-4 tablets (900-1200 mg) daily
• Duration: During the third trimester and lactation

Interaction

• May reduce the efficacy of calcium-channel blockers
• Concurrent admin of IV calcium salt with cardiac glycosides may lead to serious adverse events
• Increased risk of hypercalcemia when used with thiazide diuretics
• May reduce absorption of tetracycline, alendronate, atenolol, iron, quinolone antibiotics, sodium fluoride, and zinc

Contraindications

• Patients with hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis and bone metastasis of neoplastic process

Side Effects

• May cause gastrointestinal irritation
• May cause constipation (rare)

Precautions & Warnings

• Cautious use for patients with impaired renal function
• Cautious use for patients with cardiac disease or sarcoidosis
