Indications
- Hypertension
Pharmacology
- Centrally acting sympatholytic agent
- Antihypertensive agent
- Prodrug
- Alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist
- Vasoconstrictor adrenergic signal inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dosage of 250 mg two or three times a day
- Daily dosage increase or decrease
- Use in pediatric patients based on body weight
- Maximum recommended daily dosage is 3 gm
- Dosage adjustments with concomitant antihypertensives or thiazides
- Intravenous injection for hypertensive crisis
Interaction
- Potentiation of antihypertensive effect with other antihypertensive drugs
- Reduced doses of anesthetics may be required
- Patient monitoring for lithium toxicity symptoms when coadministered with lithium
- Not recommended with ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate
Contraindications
- Active hepatic disease
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- On therapy with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with previous liver disease or dysfunction
- Clinical edema or weight gain may be controlled by diuretic use
- Caution if edema progresses or signs of heart failure appear
- Hypertension recurrence after dialysis
- Involuntary choreoathetotic movements observed in severe bilateral cerebrovascular disease patients
- Stop therapy if involuntary movements occur

- Acute hypotension

- Gastric lavage or emesis for recent ingestion
