Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium
- Impaired absorption with iron-containing preparations
- Impaired absorption with bismuth salicylate
- Decrease in half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- Reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives with concurrent use of tetracyclines
- Possible need for downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages in patients on anticoagulant therapy
- Avoidance of concurrent use with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy and Lactation
- Avoidance in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effects on bone growth in the fetus
- Entry into breast milk, necessitating avoidance in breastfeeding mothers
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoidance during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood to the age of 8 years) to prevent permanent discoloration of teeth
