Dosage

  • Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
  • Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
  • Acne: 100 mg daily
  • Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days

Administration

  • Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing

Interaction

  • Impaired absorption with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium
  • Impaired absorption with iron-containing preparations
  • Impaired absorption with bismuth salicylate
  • Decrease in half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
  • Reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives with concurrent use of tetracyclines
  • Possible need for downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages in patients on anticoagulant therapy
  • Avoidance of concurrent use with penicillin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any tetracyclines
  • Children under 8 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • Lactating mothers

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Avoidance in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effects on bone growth in the fetus

Precautions and Warnings

  • Avoidance during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood to the age of 8 years) to prevent permanent discoloration of teeth
