Indications
- Treatment of status epilepticus
- Prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery
Pharmacology
- Acts as an anticonvulsant
- Increases efflux of sodium ions
- Stabilizes neuronal membranes
- Acts as an antiarrhythmic
- Suppresses ventricular pacemaker automaticity
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage of 200 mg daily
- Maximum adult dosage of 600 mg/day
- Children's initial dosage of 5 mg/kg per day
- Maintenance dosage for children
Drug Interaction
- Potentiation with sedative drugs or ethanol
- Enhances toxic effects of paracetamol, lithium
- Increased risk of osteomalacia with acetazolamide
- Effects with other medications and inhibitors
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to phenytoin and hydantoins
