Description
- Effective against Gram-positive organisms
- Treatment for infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Used for skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
- Also used as a prophylactic agent during major surgical procedures
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg four times daily, may be doubled in severe infections
- Oral administration, Intramuscular Injection, Intravenous Injection
- Children (2-10 years) and Children (Under 2 years) dosage
- Systemic doses may be doubled in severe infections
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased level of Fluxin in blood for prolonged period
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common side effects of gastrointestinal tract
- Minor gastrointestinal disturbances
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- In severe renal failure, consider dose reduction or extension of dose interval

Reconstitution
- Administered in other routes in conjunction with systemic therapy
- Intraarticular injection, intrapleural injection, inhaled by nebuliser
