Indications

  • Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of infections resistant to other antibiotics
  • Wide range of infections including urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
  • Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, and other systemic infections
  • Treatment of urinary, respiratory, skin, soft tissue, gastrointestinal, and biliary tract infections
  • Treatment of bone and joint, pelvic, eye, ear, nose, throat, and gonorrhoea infections

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
  • Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase enzyme
  • Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
  • Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
  • Half-life of about 3.5 hours
  • Excretion in urine as unchanged drug and active metabolites

Dosage

  • Dosage determined by severity, type of infection, and patient factors
  • Dosage range for adults: 100-750mg twice daily
  • Specific dosages for urinary, respiratory, and cystic fibrosis infections
  • Dosage adjustments for impaired renal function
  • Duration of treatment based on severity and clinical response

Administration

  • Instruction for IV infusion administration
  • Guidelines for checking solution integrity and proper fluid level during infusion

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent use with certain antacids, sucralfate, or products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc
  • Do not take concurrently with milk or other dairy products

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal and central nervous system disturbances
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Joint pain, mild photosensitivity, and transient increase in liver enzymes reported

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy risk in immature animals
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
  • Guidelines for concurrent use with antacids and dairy products

Use in Special Populations

  • Not a first-choice drug in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, and renal impairment
  • May cause crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity
