Indications

  • Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid

Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Used in the treatment of intestinal nematode infections
  • Used in higher doses in the treatment of hydatid disease
  • Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity

Pharmacology

  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
  • Depletes energy level until inadequate for survival
  • Immobilization of the parasite
  • Binding and subsequent inhibition of parasite tubulin polymerization

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended doses for adults, children over 2 years, and children of 1-2 years
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • Specific doses for hydatid disease, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis, giardiasis
  • Instructions for treatment cycles

Interaction

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Reduction of the dose in children weighing less than 10 kg
