Indications
- Hypertension
- Reduce hospitalizations in congestive heart failure
- Reduce death after myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
Angiotensin receptor blocker, oral medication, vasodilator, reduces blood pressure, AT1 receptor antagonist
Dosage
- Hypertension: 80-160 mg daily, maximum 320 mg daily
- Heart failure: 40 mg twice daily, may be increased to 80-160 mg twice daily
- Post-Myocardial Infarction: 20 mg twice daily, may increase to 160 mg daily

- Caution in heart failure and post-myocardial infarction
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness not established
- Geriatric use: No overall difference in efficacy or safety, but greater sensitivity in some elderly
- Hepatic Impairment:
- Mild to moderate: Max 80 mg once daily
- Severe: Contraindicated
Overdose Effects
Manifestations may include hypotension, tachycardia, and bradycardia
