Description

  • Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by two or more susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
  • Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
  • Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
  • Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
  • Excreted in the urine as unchanged drug and biologically active metabolites
  • Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of the causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of the patient
  • Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
  • Dosage range for lower and upper urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
  • Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily, with special dosage for Streptococcus pneumonia infection
  • Dosage for gonorrhea: Single dose of 250 or 500 mg
  • Dosage for majority other infections: 500-750 mg twice daily
  • Dosage for cystic fibrosis: 750 mg twice daily
  • Impaired renal function may require dosage adjustment
  • No dosage adjustment necessary for the elderly
  • Dosage for adolescents and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day administered in two divided doses
  • Duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection, clinical response, and bacteriological findings
  • Instructions for use of IV infusion
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
  • Common side effects: Gastrointestinal disturbances, disturbances of the central nervous system, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, mild photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes, risk of hypoglycemia, and mental health adverse effects
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation
  • Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
  • Not a drug of first choice in the pediatric population
  • Overdose effects: Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity
  • Storage conditions: Keep below 30°C temperature, protected from light and moisture, keep out of the reach of children
