Indications

  • Treatment of infections due to susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Genito-urinary tract infections
  • Venereal disease
  • Dental abscess therapy
  • H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease treatment

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum penicillin
  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
  • Stable in the presence of gastric acid
  • Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
  • Specific doses for purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment

Administration

  • Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding the required amount of suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water
  • Preparations should be taken immediately after reconstitution

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Emoxil
  • May affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects including diarrhoea, indigestion, and occasionally rash
  • Rare reports of Pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category B
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy
  • Appropriate therapy should be instituted if superinfections occur
