Indications
- Treatment of susceptible ß-lactamase negative strains of microorganisms
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease treatment
- Dental abscess short-term therapy
- H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease treatment
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in gastric acid
- Rapid oral absorption
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing up to 500 mg for severe infections
- Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily, increasing up to 250 mg for severe infections
- Specific dosage for purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, renal impairment
Administration
- Can be administered by adding reconstituted suspension to milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
- May affect gut flora and reduce efficacy of combined oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhoea, indigestion, occasional rash
- Rarely reported pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Superinfection possibility with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
- Appropriate therapy if superinfections occur
