Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall

Dosage Instructions

  • 250 mg three times daily for adults
  • 125 mg - 250 mg three times daily for children
  • 3 gm every 12 hours for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection

Administration

  • Can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water

Interaction

  • Concurrent use with Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels
  • May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Penicillin hypersensitivity

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient, such as diarrhea, indigestion, rash
  • Rare cases of Pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Category B in pregnancy
  • Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers

Precautions

  • Consider possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens
  • Discontinue if superinfections occur
