Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Upper respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Oral administration
- Absorption on empty stomach
- High concentration in phagocytes
- Tissue concentration over 50 times higher than plasma
- Biliary excretion
- Microbial protein synthesis interference
- Activity against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 500mg once daily for 3 days
- 500mg once on day 1 followed by 250mg for 4 days
- Children dosage based on body weight
- Azithromycin injection for adult patients with pneumonia or pelvic inflammatory disease
- No established use in children under 16 years
Administration
- Reconstitution procedure for suspension
- Need to be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal
Interaction
- Interactions with antacids, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, methylprednisolone, theophylline, warfarin, terfenadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or macrolide antibiotics
- Co-administration with ergot derivatives
- Patients with hepatic diseases
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects (nauseas, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, etc.)
- Allergic reactions
- Reversible elevations in liver transaminases
- Rare cases of cholestatic jaundice
- Transient mild reductions in neutrofil counts
- Reversible hearing impairment in high doses over prolonged periods
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Animal reproduction studies have shown no harm to fetus
- Caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare serious allergic reactions reported
- Long period of observation and treatment required for serious reactions
Use in Special Populations
- No dose adjustment in mild renal impairment
- Caution in severe renal impairment
