Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Vermicidal activity

- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocking glucose uptake in helminths
- Depleting energy levels in helminths
- Immobilization of parasites
- Metabolism in the liver
- Poor absorption from gastrointestinal tract
- Plasma half-life of about 8.5 hrs
- Excretion in urine
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for various infections
- 400 mg daily for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
- 400 mg twice daily for hydatid disease for patients over 60 kg
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for hydatid disease in patients less than 60 kg
- 400 mg once daily for giardiasis for 5 days
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not for neonates
- Possibly reduced dose for children under 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
- No alteration in dose needed for renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

- Dizziness
- Liver enzyme changes
- Rare reversible alopecia
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsions and meningism in cerebral disease
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Albendazole FDA pregnancy category C
- Avoid in pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks

- Blood counts and liver function tests before treatment and during each cycle
- Caution in breastfeeding
- Pregnancy exclusion before treatment
- Constant medical supervision for Echinococcosis treatment
