Acuren 25 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Edema associated with congestive heart failure
• Hypertension

Pharmacology

• Promotes water loss from the body
• Inhibits Na+/Cl- reabsorption from the kidneys
• Causes loss of potassium and increase in serum uric acid
• Causes vasodilation by activating potassium channels

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose for edema: 25 to 50 mg daily
• Initial dose for hypertension: 25 mg daily

Interaction

• Potentiates orthostatic hypotension with alcohol, barbiturates, or narcotics
• Reduces absorption when used with cholestyramine or colestipol resin
• May interfere with tests for parathyroid function

Contraindications

• Anuria
• Hypersensitivity to Hydrochlorothiazide
• Severe renal or hepatic failure

Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
• Central nervous system effects like dizziness and headache
• Cardiovascular effects like hypotension
• Metabolic effects causing electrolyte imbalance

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Thiazides cross the placental barrier and appear in cord blood
• Thiazides appear in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor for signs of fluid and electrolyte imbalance
• Warning signs or symptoms of imbalance include dryness of mouth and muscle fatigue
• Sensitivity reactions may occur in patients with or without history of allergy or bronchial asthma

Overdose Effects

• Signs and symptoms include electrolyte depletion and dehydration
• If ingestion is recent, emesis should be induced or gastric lavage performed
