Indications
- Treatment of threadworms
- Treatment of whipworms
- Treatment of roundworms
- Treatment of hookworms
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes
- Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
- Causes worms' glucose depletion
- Oral administration absorption rate of 2-10%
- Highly bound to plasma protein
- Elimination half-life of 2.8 to 9 hours
Dosage & Administration
- 100 mg dosage for threadworms
- 100 mg dosage for whipworms, roundworms, hookworms
- Twice daily for 3 days
- Second dose may be needed after 2 weeks for reinfection
Interaction
- Cimetidine inhibits Mebendox metabolism
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component of the formulation
Side Effects
- Transient abdominal pain and diarrhea
- Rash, urticaria, and angioedema
- Rare cases of convulsions
- Neutropenia and agranulocytosis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Periodic assessment of organ system functions advisable during prolonged therapy
- Potential risk to the fetus in pregnant women
- Cleanliness is important to prevent reinfection & transmission of the infection
Use in Special Populations
- Drug has not been extensively studied in children under two years
- Relative benefit/risk should be considered in treatment of children under two years
Overdose Effects
- Gastrointestinal complaints lasting up to a few hours may occur in case of accidental overdosage
- Vomiting and purging should be induced
