Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interference in bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mostly mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Frequent side-effects: diarrhoea and stool changes
  • Less frequent gastrointestinal side-effects: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
  • Central nervous system side-effects: headache and dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
  • Other possible reactions: genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution in nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Altering normal flora of the colon may permit overgrowth of clostridia
  • No use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential
  • Discontinue if allergic effect occurs

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
