Description

  • Atostin is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) and triglycerides levels in certain diseases when response to diet and other non-pharmacological measures is inadequate.

DosageAndAdministration

  • Atostin 20 mg Tablet should be taken by mouth once daily, at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food.

Pharmacology

  • Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, responsible for the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol.

Indication

  • Reduction of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of this medication
  • Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases
  • History of serious adverse reaction to prior administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors

Interaction

  • Myopathy risk increased with concurrent administration of cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, erythromycin, azole antifungals

  • Liver function tests should be performed before the initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter
  • Discontinue if markedly elevated CPK levels occur or myopathy is diagnosed

SpecialPopulations

  • Plasma concentrations of Atostin are higher in healthy elderly subjects than in young adults
  • No clinically significant difference in LDL-C reduction with Atostin between men and women

OverdoseEffects

  • Specific treatment not available for atorvastatin overdose
  • Liver function tests should be performed and serum CK levels should be monitored
