Thalidon 25 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Management of hypertension
• Adjunctive therapy in edema associated with heart failure
• Adjunctive therapy in edema associated with hepatic cirrhosis
• Adjunctive therapy in edema associated with corticosteroid therapy
• Adjunctive therapy in edema associated with estrogen therapy

Pharmacology

• Thiazide-type diuretic-antihypertensive
• Treatment of hypertension
• Adjunctive therapy of edema associated with renal disease
• Adjunctive therapy of edema associated with ascites due to liver cirrhosis
• Long elimination half-life

Dosage & Administration

• Therapy initiation with lowest possible dose
• Titration for maximum therapeutic benefit
• Single dose daily or every other day
• Usual adult dose: 25 to 50 mg daily
• Clinically useful dosage range: 12.5 to 50 mg daily

Interaction

• Caution in impaired hepatic function
• Cautious dosage schedule in severe coronary or cerebral arteriosclerosis
• Potentiation of antihypertensive agents by diuretics
• Potassium loss potentiation by corticosteroids
• Possible adjustment of insulin or oral antidiabetic agents dosage

Contraindications

• Anuria
• Severe renal or hepatic failure
• Refractory hypokalemia or conditions involving enhanced potassium loss
• Hyponatremia
• Hypersensitivity to Chlorthalidone and other sulfonamide derivatives

Side Effects

• Frequent hypokalemia, hyperuricemia, rise in blood lipids
• Occasional hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia, hyperglycemia
• Rare hypercalcemia, glycosuria, worsening of diabetic metabolic state

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoidance during pregnancy
• Avoidance during lactation due to presence in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Dosage reduction in moderate renal failure
• Risk of precipitating hepatic encephalopathy
• Avoidance in pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks

Overdose Effects

• Symptoms of acute overdosage include nausea, weakness, dizziness
