Indications

Pharmacology
- Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Acts through the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
- Children's dosage: 125 mg three times daily
- Additional dosage recommendations for severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
- Dosage adjustments in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels of Mox
- May affect gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects including diarrhea, indigestion, and occasionally rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in human milk, caution advised during lactation
