Indications
- Treatment of novel or re-emerging pandemic influenza virus infections
Description
- Effective in treating COVID-19
- Only used when other influenza antiviral drugs are ineffective
- Not available in hospitals and pharmacies
Pharmacology
- Metabolized into favipiravir ribosyl triphosphate
- Selectively inhibits RNA polymerase of the influenza virus
- Effective against all types and sub-types of human influenza A, B, and C viruses
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dosage is 1600 mg on Day 1
- Followed by 600 mg from Day 2 to Day 5
- Total treatment duration should be 5 days
Interaction
- Decreased RBC production in animal studies
- Increases in liver function parameters
- Toxicity information in humans not readily available
Contraindications
- Contraindicated for pregnant women
Side Effects
- Most common side effects are diarrhea
