Indications
- Management of moderate to severe acute post-operative pain
- Relief of pain and inflammation after ocular surgery
- Decrease in eye inflammation or redness due to seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of NSAIDs
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Peripherally acting analgesic
- Highly protein bound
- Metabolized in the liver
Pharmacology
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours, short-term use only
- Injection may be used in single or multiple doses for postoperative pain
- IM administration should be given slowly and deeply into the muscle
- Maximum effect within 1 to 2 hours after dosing IV or IM
- Dose should not exceed 40 mg/day
- Recommended eye drop administration: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
Interaction
- Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
- Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
- Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
- Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
- Enhanced methotrexate toxicity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Children under 16 years of age
- Prophylactic analgesic use before surgery
