Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
Active against Gram-positive organisms, little activity against Gram-negative bacilli, inhibits cell wall formation, bactericidal against penicillinase-producing staphylococci, interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily, may be doubled in severe infections
- Oral administration for children (2-10 years): 1/2 of adult dose
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1g four times daily by slow injection or intravenous infusion, doses may be doubled in severe infections
- Administration for children (2-10 years): half of the adult dose
- Administration for children under 2 years: a quarter of the adult dose
Administration
Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before a meal
Interaction
Concurrent use may result in increased levels of Flubion in the blood for a prolonged period
Contraindications
Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Other reported side effects: rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA Pregnancy Category B, caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in patients with allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
Consider dose reduction in severe renal failure (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min)
