Indications

Composition

Pharmacology
- Sterile aqueous solution of crystalline amino acids
- Positive nitrogen balance for postoperative period
- Clear, colorless to pale yellow colored solution
- pH range of 5.0 to 7.0
Dosage & Administration
- Dependent on patient's condition and metabolic stress
- Infusion rates based on body weight
- Slow infusion recommended
- Recommended dosage range: 0.10-0.25 g nitrogen/kg/day
- Dosage range corresponds to 15-35 ml IV/kg/day
Interaction
- No significant pharmacological effects
- No expected interactions with other medicaments
Contraindications
- Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism
- Severe liver dysfunction
- Severe uremia without dialysis facilities
- Hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma
Side Effects
- Rarely causes nausea
- Possible vomiting, flushing, sweating at high infusion rates
- Transient liver test increases reported
- Potential hypersensitivity reactions
- Thrombophlebitis risk with peripheral veins usage
- Incidence of thrombophlebitis may be reduced with fat emulsion infusion
- Hyperphenylalaninemia risk in severely ill, premature infants
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Reported successful and safe administration during pregnancy in humans
- No animal reproduction studies carried out
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased urinary excretion of trace elements like copper and zinc
- Monitoring of phenylalanine level in premature infants
- Caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, severe heart failure, or renal function issues
- Risk of thiamine deficiency syndrome in severely malnourished patients
- Serum potassium and blood glucose monitoring recommended
- Additional phosphate supply recommended for hypophosphatemia
Overdose Effects
- Risk of nausea, vomiting, sweating with higher-than-recommended dosages
- Thrombophlebitis risk with peripheral vein usage
- Osmotic diuresis with dehydration risk
- Symptoms related to hyperglycemia in case of overdose
