Pharmacology

Cefdinir is a semisynthetic third generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against common pathogens, including b-lactamase producing strains like Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis.

Dosage & Administration

Tablet Dosage:
- 600 mg total daily dose for all infections
- Dosage schedule varies for different infections
Oral Suspension Dosage: 14 mg/kg body weight up to a maximum of 600 mg per day
Reconstitution Instructions: Reconstituted suspension should be used within 10 days at room temperature or within 14 days in a refrigerator

Interaction

Antacids: Take at least 2 hours interval of antacid administration
Iron supplement: Take at least 2 hours interval of iron supplement administration
Probencid: It inhibits the renal excretion of the antibiotic

Contraindications

Cefdinir is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefdinir was not detected in breast milk after administration of single 600 mg doses

Precautions & Warnings

Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of colitis
Reduce total daily dose in patients with transient or persistent renal insufficiency
