Lacitab 4 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of hypertension
• May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents

Pharmacology

• Inhibits calcium influx into smooth muscle cells
• Competitive inhibition of voltage-dependent calcium 'L' channels

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended initial dose is 2 mg once daily
• Dose may be increased to 4 mg and then to 6 mg after 3 to 4 weeks
• Preferably taken in the morning

Interaction

• Plasma concentration may be increased by simultaneous administration of cimetidine
• No specific pharmacodynamic interaction problems identified with common antihypertensive agents

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
• Cardiogenic shock
• Unstable angina
• Avoid within 1 month of myocardial infarction
• Impaired left ventricular function

Side Effects

• Well tolerated in general
• Some individuals may experience flushing, palpitation, edema, headache, dizziness, gastro-intestinal disturbances, etc.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• No data on safety of Lacidipine in human pregnancy
• No evidence of teratogenic effect in animal study
• Likely excretion into breast milk, caution during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• Cardiac conduction abnormalities
• Poor cardiac reserves
• Hepatic impairment
• Withdraw if ischemic pain occurs shortly after initiating treatment
• Avoid grapefruit juice

Use in Special Populations

• No data on safety or efficacy in neonates
• Treatment not evaluated in children
• Dose reduction in severe hepatic impairment

Overdose Effects

• Prolonged peripheral vasodilation
• Hypotension and tachycardia
• Bradycardia or prolonged AV conduction
• Symptomatic and supportive treatment for management
