Indications

Treatment of essential hypertension
Treatment of hypertension in patients with renal function impairment
Treatment of salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure

Pharmacology

Diuretic antihypertensive
Vasodilation effect
Inhibition of ion passage across membranes
Antihypertensive action leading to decrease in vascular hyperreactivity and peripheral resistance

Dosage & Administration

One tablet daily in the morning
Combination with other categories of anti-hypertensive agent in severe cases
Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients

Interaction

Addition to or potentiation of the action of other antihypertensive drugs
Decrease in arterial responsiveness to norepinephrine
Should not be given concomitantly with lithium due to reduced clearance and risk of toxicity

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
Severe renal failure
Hepatic encephalopathy or severe hepatic failure
Hypokalaemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended in pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

Monitoring of potassium and uric acid serum levels
Close monitoring of patients with a history of allergy to sulfonamide derivatives
No allergic manifestations reported during clinical trials

Overdose Effects

Symptoms may include: allergies, skin rashes, epigastric pain, nausea, photosensitivity, dizziness, weakness, paraesthesia
Supportive and symptomatic treatment
Correction of electrolyte abnormalities
